Westerville City Schools - Mark Twain & Robert Frost Elementary

Project Overview
To address security concerns and enhance functionality, Lehman Daman simultaneously completed upgrades at Mark Twain Elementary and Robert Frost Elementary. Originally built as open-space concept schools over 50 years ago, both buildings had undergone previous renovations to create enclosed classrooms. However, the gyms remained open, raising safety issues, especially when used as voting precincts.
Our solution involved replacing existing display cases with floor-to-ceiling partition walls accented by clerestory windows. This design provides clear separation between the gym and classroom wings while creating additional instructional opportunities within the gym. The project also included restroom renovations at both schools to accommodate children with special needs.

Project Challenges
Lehman Daman managed two simultaneous projects at schools located just a few miles apart. While proximity allowed for efficient resource sharing, it also demanded strong oversight and collaboration.
The majority of construction took place during summer break to minimize disruption to students and staff. However, as the new school year approached, the project team faced the added complexity of completing final tasks while teachers and administrators returned to prepare classrooms. This required maintaining a safe and clearly separated jobsite within active school environments, ensuring that construction zones were secure and inaccessible to staff.
