What makes the Fresh Start Family Focused Recovery Center unique?
The Fresh Start Center stands out for its whole-family approach to recovery, allowing mothers with substance use disorder (SUD) to remain with their children during treatment. This model reduces the need for foster care or intervention from child welfare services, supporting family unity during a vulnerable time.
Who developed the Fresh Start Center and what is its mission?
Developed by Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana, the center’s mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment for pregnant women and mothers with SUD. It offers trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment that prioritizes both maternal recovery and child well-being.
How is the facility designed to support recovery and family life?
The center includes thoughtfully planned spaces such as communal kitchens, counseling offices, family bedrooms, and supervised play areas for children. Its layout supports both individual and group therapy while creating a welcoming home-like atmosphere that fosters healing and family connection.
What role did the community play in supporting the project?
The Fresh Start Center was the first beneficiary of Lehman Daman’s charity event, Pickle with Purpose, held in August 2024. This event raised essential donations—like baby supplies and hygiene products—for families entering the program, showing strong local support for the initiative.
How will this project impact the broader community?
Addressing Ohio’s high opioid overdose and neonatal abstinence syndrome rates, the center serves over 100 women and children annually. By keeping families together and offering comprehensive treatment, it breaks cycles of addiction and strengthens the long-term health of the community.
